I’m taking on The Legacy Challenge to support our veterans’ families

In the trenches of the Western Front during World War I, a soldier said to his dying mate “I’ll look after the missus and kids”. This became known as The Promise – and it is still kept today. Over 100 years later, Legacy is still providing support to the families of veterans who have given their lives or health for our safety.

It is easy as civilians to be distant from the realities of war, but for the partners, families and children of service men and women, the impacts are ever-present. Over the past 2 years, I have had the privilege of meeting individuals and families who are still navigating the aftermath of their loved ones’ sacrifice. To hear their candid accounts of the hardest moments of their lives is truly heart-wrenching. But witnessing the vital role Legacy plays in their lives highlights just how essential The Promise remains today.

That’s why this November, I’ll be raising money for Legacy by completing the ADF Basic Fitness Assessment for 11 days straight. Consisting of a minimum of 30 push ups in a minute, 60 sit ups in a minute and a 2.4km run in 12 minutes 18 seconds 😬I’ll be putting myself through the tiniest part of the military experience. I’m pretty sure that during the running especially I’ll be a little self-indulgent and allow myself to think that this is the worst thing I’ve ever done in my life. But when I stop on Remembrance Day and reflect on the 11 days prior, it’ll be pretty apparent that my ‘sacrifice’ is absolutely nothing in comparison to the daily challenges faced by veterans and their families.

So I’m not so good at posting updates on this page and wildly the options are Facebook live or TikTok and apparently my old person instagram skills don’t count… but, we’re 4 days down, everyday I lament Mitch for coming up with this idea and making me do fitness but I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who has sponsored me and that pushes me forward. So, if you want proof that I’m doing the challenge or if you want to hear my ramblings, all updates are at @catherine.e.ashton on instagram. But, new challenge, the 17-25yo male 2.4km time is 11.18 and I hit 11.21 so the new goal is to make 11.18 by the end of the challenge. Thank you for your support
